Village Hydroponics: nourishing Burlington’s future, one hydroponic harvest at a time.

Climate Resilience

Village Hydroponics stands at the forefront of climate resilience, offering a robust response to climate-related disasters through its use of shipping containers for year-round produce growth. This approach not only minimizes the need to import food during Vermont's winters, significantly reducing food miles and the carbon footprint associated with long-distance transportation, but it also taps into Burlington's commitment to renewable energy to power its operations. Furthermore, by adopting hydroponic farming techniques, Village Hydroponics uses up to 90% less water than conventional agriculture, addressing the urgent need for water conservation amidst growing environmental challenges. Together, these strategies form a cohesive model for sustainable local food production, enhancing community resilience to climate change while promoting environmental stewardship.

Village Hydroponics is at the forefront of innovative agriculture in Burlington, Vermont, utilizing hydroponic technology inside of a shipping container to grow fresh, nutrient-rich produce even in the coldest and darkest winter months. Our mission is to nourish our community when other farms cannot, champion food justice, and promote environmental sustainability. By utilizing controlled environment agriculture and mutual aid methods to grow and distribute vegetables through the entire off season, we can take a pivotal step in our community's self-sufficiency.

Community Care

Village Hydroponics sprouted from the rich soil of community effort and shared vision, deeply rooted in the success of The Peoples Farmstand and The Peoples Kitchen. These sister initiatives, which have been supplying fresh, culturally-relevant produce and nourishing meals to Burlington's underserved communities, highlighted the stark need for sustainable food sources year-round. Motivated by the gap in fresh produce availability during Vermont's harsh winters, Village Hydroponics was conceived to extend the growing season, ensuring continuous access to healthy food. Our history is a testament to the power of collective action, inspired by the desire to nurture our community with every leaf and every harvest.
